  <dc:description>This oval-shaped photograph is a formal head and shoulders portrait taken in profile of Cardinal Alessandro Franchi, wearing his Cardinal's robes and pectoral crucifix; Cardinal Franchi was born in Rome on 25th June 1819 and ordained priest on 16th March 1842; he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Thessalonica on 19th June 1856 and ordained Bishop on 5th July 1856; he was appointed Cardinal-Priest of S.Maria in Trastevere on 22nd December 1873 and elevated to Cardinal on 22nd December 1873; he was appointed Secretary of the Secretariat of State on 5th March 1878 and died, aged 59, on 31st July 1878.</dc:description>
