  <dc:description>This very interesting photograph shows the family of Cardinal Gordon Gray's grandparents, including Cardinal Gray's parents and, indeed, the Cardinal himself as a baby in his mother's arms; the photograph must have been taken between 1910 and 1911 since the Cardinal was born in 1910; the piece of paper attached to the photograph has pencilled notes of the names and positions of all those in the photograph and is from A Chitnis on 16th November 1989; Cardinal Gray was born in Leith, Edinburgh in 1910 and was ordained to the priesthood on 15th June 1935; he was appointed as Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh in 1951, a position which he held until his retirement in 1985, a period of 34 years; in 1969, he became the first resident Scottish Cardinal in Scotland since the Reformation; he died in Edinburgh on 19th July 1993, aged 82; full details of Cardinal Gray's life can be found on pp 430 to 436 of The Catholic Directory for Scotland for 1994.</dc:description>
