Cardinal Gordon Joseph Gray, Diocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh This very interesting photograph shows the family of Cardinal Gordon Gray's grandparents, including Cardinal Gray's parents and, indeed, the Cardinal himself as a baby in his mother's arms; the photograph must have been taken between 1910 and 1911 since the Cardinal was born in 1910; the piece of paper attached to the photograph has pencilled notes of the names and positions of all those in the photograph and is from A Chitnis on 16th November 1989; Cardinal Gray was born in Leith, Edinburgh in 1910 and was ordained to the priesthood on 15th June 1935; he was appointed as Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh in 1951, a position which he held until his retirement in 1985, a period of 34 years; in 1969, he became the first resident Scottish Cardinal in Scotland since the Reformation; he died in Edinburgh on 19th July 1993, aged 82; full details of Cardinal Gray's life can be found on pp 430 to 436 of The Catholic Directory for Scotland for 1994.
