He was educated at Prior Park, near Bath, run by the Christian Brothers, and then Beaumont College. He entered the novitiate at Manresa, Roehampton, 7 September 1948 and took his first vows two years later at Harlaxton. He did two years of Philosophy at Heythrop, Oxfordshire, followed by a third at Manresa and a year’s pedagogy. Between 1954 and 1958 he studied Humanities at Campion Hall, Oxford, for which he received a Pass – he had been badly injured in a car accident in 1957. From 1958 he taught for a year at Stonyhurst, and then returned to Heythrop for theology, 1960 to 1964. He was ordained Priest there 10 August 1964 by Bishop Cyril Cowderoy of Southwark. From September he was at St Beuno’s for Tertianship. He took his final vows at Campion Hall, 8 December 1967. Levi left the priesthood in 1977. He subsequently married Deirdre Craig (granddaughter of Lord Craigavon). He spent a year as archaeological correspondent for The Times before returning to academic life. In 1984, he was elected Oxford Professor of Poetry, a post which he held until 1989. He died 1 February 2000, Framptonon-Severn.</Nationality>
