Br Henry Foley’s father was a vicar of a Worcestershire parish. He himself was articled to a local solicitor, eventually settling down as a lawyer and marrying. In 1846 he was received into the Church in Worcestor and when his wife died in 1851 he joined the Society. He did not feel called to the priesthood and given his legal experience he, as a brother, gave invaluable service as secretary to several Provincials. In this work he came to read the Province papers and produced the ‘Records of the English Province SJ, whose volumes, 8,000 pages in total, appeared 1877-1883.
