Three of his sisters were to join the Society of the Holy Child. He was educated the Mount. He joined the Society on 12 September 1889 at St Leonard’s, where he spent his first year, then moved for his second to Manresa. In 1893 he took his London Degree. In 1896 Murphy travelled to South Africa, accompanying Fr Sykes, in the hope that the climate there would improve his health. However his declined considerably and he returned to England within a year. He was given a year of complete rest by the Provincial, part of which he spent with his family at Waterloo.

Murphy, now considerably more healthy spent a year teaching at Wimbledon, then went for theology and was ordained in 1904. The next 12 years were spent at the Clitheroe Mission, with the Secular Philosophers at Stonyhurst and at St Walburge’s, Preston. He was then back at Wimbledon for two years followed by a move in 1918 to St Francis Xavier’s, Liverpool where he remained until his death. He died of pneumonia at the Liverpool Royal Infirmary on 30 November 1925, and was buried at the Jesuit burial plot at Lydiate.</Nationality>
