He remained there for a year’s juniorate before going to St Ignatius College in Valkenburg, Holland for his philosophy studies. In 1931 he returned to England to teach at St Michael’s College, Leeds for a year before beginning his theology at Heythrop in 1932.  Murphy was ordained at Heythrop in 1935.  His tertianship was at St Beuno’s, then he was attached to St David’s parish in Dalkeith outside Edinburgh.  Murphy became a Military Chaplain shortly after war broke out.  His first posting was to Iceland, where he learnt to ski in order to get to groups of Catholics spread over a wide area.   He remained in the army until 1946, when he went to Germany to work in Religious Affairs with the military for another year.  After that Murphy went to St Gabriel’s, Birmingham and in 1952 moved to Harlaxton where he became Master of the Novices. In 1954 he moved to Blackpool where he was a member of the church staff at the Sacred Heart.  In 1957 he served as Minister first at St Beuno’s 1957-1969, then at St Francis Xavier’s College, Liverpool 1969-1974 and finally at Preston from 1974-1987.  In October 1988 he had a hip operation and was convalescing at Our Lady of Compassion Hospital, Blackburn when he died on 2 January 1989.</Nationality>
