He was descended from one of the oldest families in England, the Stricklands having lived at Sizergh Castle, near Kendal, since the year 1066. In 1831 he was sent to Stonyhurst and spent three years there, and retuned in 1937. In 1938 he was admitted into the novitiate at Hodder, and in 1841 passed his matriculation examination in London. He was ordained the following year in Vals, and from there he went on to make his Tertianship. He was sent to Madura, Southern India, in 1847 as missioner, acting also in the capacity of military chaplain. He remained there until 1853, when he returned to England via Rome. It was during this visit home that he published ‘The Jesuit in India’. After spending a short time in Rome in 1853, during which time he collected £4,000 for his foreign mission, he was sent again to India, this time Bombay. Before his return home again in 1859, he had attended the Indian army on its expedition to Persia. In 1869 Fr Strickland was in St Beuno’s, and the following year was appointed to the Lulworth mission, in which he remained for three years, and at the end of that time was made a Spiritual Coadjutor. In 1865 he was sent to Richmond in Yorkshire, and during his stay of nearly ten years there built the church of St Joseph and St Francis Xavier. In 1874 he came to London with bad health and for some time was not settled in any particular place or work. He went to Oxford for a year as ‘operarius’ in 1876, the next year he was in Liverpool, and the year following he spent n Rhyl. In 1880 he went to St Walburge’s in Preston for two years and then went on to Bristol. In 1883 he went to Barbados where he was missioner and military chaplain, and also naval chaplain. He stayed there for 12 years. The last six years of his life were spent at Manresa where he died, 30 May 1901.</Nationality>
