On his mother’s side he was a great-grandson of Augustus Welby Pugin. He went to Hodder in September 1895, following his two elder brothers, Roger and Humphrey. His father died in 1902, and he left Stonyhurst at the end of that school year to take up a business post in Birmingham. After three years he entered the novitiate at Manresa on 1 February 1906. After three years of philosophy at St Mary’s Hal, he did two years’ teaching at Hodder and one at Stamford Hill. Then followed four years of theology at St Beuno’s. He was ordained priest on the feast of St Ignatius, 1918, and in September the following year he joined the teaching staff at Stonyhurst, where he took over the editorship if the Stonyhurst Magazine in 1920.

From September 1924 to July 1925, Fr Watts was at Manresa for his tertianship. Apart from that time, Fr Watts acted as both Editor and Manager of the Magazine from September 1920 to September 1943, a month before his death. This included the writing, editing, and all the business connected with the production and distribution of six issues a year, as well as assisting in the production of the Stonyhurst War Record. At the same time he was either acting as a master on the teaching staff or, from 1934 onwards, acting as librarian and curator of the Museum.

During the war the work of editing the Magazine and getting it printed became increasingly difficult. At the same time his health gave cause for anxiety. He was forced to take repeat rests, and finally became seriously ill while visiting his sister near Worcester. He died 23 October 1943 and his funeral took place at Stonyhurst.</Nationality>
