Henry Martyn Parker was born at Liverpool to a Protestant family and was ordained as a priest in the Church of England. He converted to Catholicism in the wake of two other priests from St Bartholomew’s in Brighton and about 50 of the congregation converting. He was received into the Church by Cardinal Manning. Parker entered the Society on 21 October 1878, taught at the Mount in 1880 and at Hodder in 1881. He studied philosophy at the Seminary and theology in Jersey, where he was ordained in 1885. In 1886-7 he was on the mission staff at Accrington and in the following year made his Tertianship at Roehampton. In 1889 he went to Jamaica with Bishop Gordon and worked at the school there until 1894 when he returned to England, working successively at Westminster, Denbigh and St Helens (Holy Cross) till 1897. Parker became Minister at Rhyl in 1897, and in 1900 went to Manresa, his health failing. In 1901-1902 he worked as assistant at Prescot. In 1903 he worked as a chaplain on a troopship to Bombay. From 1904 to 1909 he was successively at Bristol, Yarmouth and Wakefield. He then retired to Petworth and went to Clitheroe a little before his death on 5 August 1913. He was buried at Stonyhurst.
