Charles Hungerford Pollen was born on 1 May 1863 in Bayswater. His family moved to Munster when he was nine and he had a Catholic education there, but they returned in 1876 when Westphalia started to become less congenial for Catholics. Pollen went to Stonyhurst for a year followed by The Oratory at Edgbaston for another year. For two years after leaving school he studied at the Royal School of Mines in London, specialising in the chemical department of petrology. After this he travelled to Russia in 1881, working in research laboratories in Ekaterinburg and Schlusselburg. He returned to London in 1883 and worked at the Bank of England for six years, before entering the Society at Manresa House, Roehampton on 30 April 1889.

Pollen did the first year of his novitiate at Roehampton and the second at St Leonards. After Philosophy he spent a year at Stonyhurst as Choir-master and as a student of law. In 1895 he went to St Beuno’s for Theology, where at the same time he pursued his interest in Geology and Palaeontology, publishing an article in the Geological Society’s Journal in 1896. He was made a Fellow of the Geological Society. After his tertianship Pollen went to British Guiana [Guyana] as Headmaster of St Stanislaus School, organising a move of the school to a new site. Pollen returned to England in 1909, and was based at Farm Street, where he edited the Journal Farm Street Calendar and directed a Sodality. In 1915 he started running the Retreat House at Oakwook Hall, Romiley, where he advocated the value of retreats for working men, later taken up and expanded by Fr Plater. In 1923 the establishment moved to Loyola Hall, Rainhill, and Pollen continued to run it until 1927. He suffered from ill-health and then a severe car accident, and after a short period at Stamford Hill on light duties needed an operation from which he recovered slowly. He spent two years at St Beuno’s as Spiritual Father, and in September 1930 went to Stonyhurst for his Retreat, but became ill and died on 19 October 1930 at Preston. </Nationality>
