Richard Birch was born in Great Harwood, near Blackburn on the 9th June 1920. He was educated at the Preston Catholic College. In 1938 on the 7th September he entered the novitiate at Roehampton. Colleague Peter McArdle recalls them together at Manresa in 1938 and their time together at Heythrop. Birch spent 5 years teaching as a scholastic as Corby School, Sunderland, and then at S.F.C. Liverpool. He was ordained priest at the end of his second year in 1951. He then went on to teach at his former school, the Catholic College for roughly twenty years. Birch retired to Stonyhurst and died on the 28th October 1981.
