Fr John Butler SJ (alias Thompson), who became the tenth Lord Cahir, on the death of his brother, was born 8 August 1727. He was educated at St Omer’s College (France), and entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus 7 September 1745, at Watten [France]. He was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest at Liege (Belgium) in 1758, and was in due course professed of the four vows. He arrived in Hereford to take charge of the mission there, on 4 April 1760. In 1778 he was almost universally nominated by the Prelates of Ireland to fill the vacant See of Limerick, however Butler, who had protested from the start, refused to accept the dignity, and died in Hereford on 20 June 1786.
