Fr John Carroll SJ (Archbishop of Baltimore) was born 8 January 1736, in Maryland, USA. He was sent to St Omer’s College for his education, and entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus at Watten (France), on 7 September 1753. He was professed of the four vows 2 February 1771, and was residing at the College of Bruges at the time of its suppression and plunder by the Austro-Belgic government, in October 1773. He returned to Maryland 26 June 1774, and became SUperior of the Missions there. Baltimore was created an Episcopal see on 6 November 1789, and Fr Carroll was recommended by the clerical staff of America, as its first Bishop, and approved by the Holy See. Returning to England, he was consecrated at Lulworth Castle Chapel (Dorset), on 15 August 1790, by Bishop Charles Walmesley. He left England on 8 October 1790, and arrived back in America 7 December. Baltimore was raised into an Archbishopric on 8 April 1808, and Bishop Carroll became its first Archbishop. He died at Baltimore (Maryland) on 3 December 1815.
