Benedict Carry was born in Ireland on the 28 September 1919. However, he was brought up in Leeds, where he attended St Michael’s College. He joined the noviceship at Manresa House (Roehampton) on the 7 September 1937 – the last intake of novices to complete a ‘normal’ noviceship under the pre-war regime.

Following a tumultuous period during WW2, the 2nd year Juniors of Manresa House moved to Heythrop College and so George became one of the ‘Bellarmine babes’ who were born prematurely to the study of Minor Logic at Heythrop in October 1940. George then went to teach at Preston Catholic College in January 1941. He briefly returned in 1948 and was viewed as a valuable master, inside and outside of the classroom. He edited the school magazine, produced the pantomime and concert, and was not shy to involve himself in singing. After a short period of teaching, Carry returned to Heythrop in September 1941 for his Philosophy. Following this and completing a degree in Classics at Oxford, Carry was sent to Lyons in France for his Theology. He enjoyed this experience thoroughly.

Following this, he completed his Tertianship at St Beuno’s in 1954-55. Immediately after he was posted to Southern Rhodesia (as it was at the time), being part of a large contingent of priests and brothers who in that year came to the relief of the hard-pressed garrison of the Salisbury Mission, exhausted by years of man-power shortage and depletion which the war had accentuated.
Carry spent 12 years teaching in Salisbury (Rhodesia), alternately at St George’s and St Ignatius’s Colleges. In about 1968, he spent periods of supply work at the Mhondoro Mission and at Braeside. He also did a Shona language course at Prestage House. However, this did not avail him much in his next major appointment, which was to the seminary at Kinshasa in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo). After about 5 or 6 years, he was very happy to be returning to Rhodesia, where he was apparently very content.

Carry kept himself very busy and worked at Dzivaresekwa, Braeside (again) and Rhodesville parish, interspersed with retreat-giving in South Africa. Early in 1977 he became Superior and parish priest at the Chishwasha Mission for a couple of years, until finally he was appointed to Salisbury Cathedral, where he served as an assistant priest for the last 2 and a half years of his life. In this role, he threw himself whole-heartedly and with conspicuous energy into any work that he was called upon to do. Carry died suddenly on 22 June 1981 at Harare, Zimbabwe after complaining of a pain in his left arm.

Fr Henry Wardale, provincial of the Zimbabwe Vice-Province, added the following comments in the course of his homily at the Cathedral funeral mass for Fr Carry. “He worked as a Jesuit in 16 or 17 places in Zaire and Zimbabwe. Much of his time was spent teaching. He was also on the missions, taught in a seminary and did pastoral work in Salisbury. He was an effervescent sort of character – always on the point of bubbling over. He had a cheerful versatility and wide interests. He managed to do most things – and the things he could not do he seemed to do somehow. He had a great zest for life and wide skills. At Oxford, he played football and played for the university. He had a proficiency in music, painting and poetry”. </Nationality>
