Fr Joseph Coupe was born 8 June 1790, Houghton, near Blackburn (Lancashire), England. He made his humanities at Stonyhurst College, and entered the English Province of the restored Society of Jesus at Hodder, 7 September 1807. After teaching at Stonyhurst College, he left the Society on 17 September 1815, still remaining in the College, and was readmitted on 8 June or July 1816. He studied theology, and was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest by Bishop [Thomas] Smith, at Durham, on 16 December 1817. On 14 January 1818 he was sent to the Gillmoss mission (Lancashire), where he built the chapel, and opened it on 15 July 1824. He died at Gillmoss, on 20 December 1834.
