Entered the novitiate of the Benedictine monastery at Ampleforth Abbey in North Yorkshire in 1941, at the age of 18. He received the habit and the monastic name of Basil. He was solemnly professed in 1945. Ordained a priest on 23 July 1950. On 9 February 1976, Hume was appointed Archbishop of Westminster. Died 17 June 1999.
