Fr James Brownbill SJ was born 31 July 1798, at Gillmoss (Lancashire), England. He was educated at Stonyhurst College, and entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus 7 September 1815. He was made Spiritual Coadjutor on 15 August 1836. After the usual course of study and teaching, he was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest by Bishop Thomas Penswick at Stonyhurst, 30 July 1829. On 14 November 1830 he was appointed chaplain to Lord Clifford at Ugbrook Park. On 15 November 1835 he became Superior of the Seminary, Stonyhurst, and on 15 May 1836 he was declared Rector of Stonyhurst College. On 29 May 1839 he became Minister of Stonyhurst, and after a few brief changes, partly to recover his health, he was declared Rector of the College of St Ignatius (London), on 14 September 1841. He remained in that position until August or September 1854, when he was removed to the Mission of Bury St Edmund’s. In March 1867 he returned as a missioner to London, and after two subsequent changes was sent to Newhall, Chelmsford, where he died on 14 January 1880.
