He was employed in a shipping agent's office for two and a half years before he began late vocation studies, first for a year at Glossop, and then another year at Osterley.

He entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus at Roehampton, London, in 1933 and remained there for his juniorate. Philosophy began at Heythrop, Oxon, in 1937 and he went to Campion Hall in 1940 to study philosophy, politics, and economics before returning to Heythrop for theology (1944-1948).

Prior to his tertianship he became Assistant Director of the Catholic Social Guild at the Catholic Worker's College in Oxford and returned there in 1950. He was appointed Principal in 1953, remaining there until he joined the staff at Craighead Retreat House, Bothwell (1958-1967). During that time he was appointed a Province Consultor and in 1967 moved to Heythrop for a year to be Co-ordinator of the "Social Survey of the Province".

He was appointed Province Northern Delegate in 1968 and moved to St Francis Xavier's, Liverpool. In 1970 he returned to Craighead and for the next 13 years was superior.

He then moved to Edinburgh in 1983 as Superior. During his time in Scotland he was the Province's delegate to the Scottish Council for Major Religious Superiors (1970-1988). In 1989 he had a heart attack but recovered to return to Edinburgh.

After over 25 years as a Superior he moved to Manresa House, Birmingham in February of 1993. In September of the same year he was hospitalised while visiting friends in Edinburgh. It was while convalescing at St Joseph's Nursing Home that he died peacefully on 10 February 1994. His funeral was held at the Sacred Heart, Edinburgh. </Nationality>
