Entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus 7 December 1867. Ordained as a Roman Catholic priest 22 September 1878. Final vows in the Society of Jesus 15 August 1881. Died 23 December 1928 St Helens.

William Shapter was received into the Church at the age of eighteen in 1865. He then travelled to New Zealand and India, where he entered the Society of Jesus in 1897 at Negapatam. He completed his probation and some part of his juniorate at St Joseph's College and taught the boys there for two years. Shapter then returned to England to study philosophy at St Mary's Hall. He was transferred to the English Province in 1875 and ordained at St Beuno's on 22 September 1878. After a year at Beaumont in the Preparatory Department, and another in the Tertianship, he worked at Preston, St Helens and Wigan from 1881-1895 with an interlude as Prefect of Philosophers at Stonyhurst from 1885-1891. He then returned to India to the Bombay Mission as professor of English and later Rector at St Xavier's College, Bombay, where he remained until 1905. Then he spent five years on the Mission at Leigh and Bury St Edmunds. In 1911, he went to work at Lowe House, St Helens, where he remained until his death on 23 December 1928.
