Fr Thomas Clifton SJ was born 7 April 1700, in Fylde (Lancashire), England. He entered the English Province of the Society of Jesus 7 September 1718, was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest in 1730, and was professed of the four vows 2 February 1736, in England. After teaching humanities at St Omer’s College (France), he was appointed Professor of Theology at Liege (Belgium), and was subsequently sent to the English mission. In 1706-1707 he appears as a missioner in the Residence of St John the Evangelist (Durham district). In 1754 he was minister at the English College, Rome, and Penitentiary at St Peter’s. He afterwards became Rector of Ghent (Belgium), and in 1764 is named as Minister there. He was likewise there at the suppression of the College by the Austro-Belgic government in 1773, and was examined by the Commissioners. He died on 27 April 1777, in Shropshire, England.
