Jerome O’Hea was born in Clapham, London on 28 May 1893, and was educated at Wimbledon College. He entered the Society on 7 September 1911 at Roehampton where he did his novitiate and remained there for one year of juniorate before going on to St Mary’s Hall for Philosophy in 1914. In 1917 he was sent to teach at Mount St Mary’s, in 1918 he was teaching physics and chemistry at Wimbledon and in 1919 he was on the staff at Beaumont. In 1922 he went to St Beuno’s for theology and was ordained priest there on 20 September 1925. After his theology, O’Hea was sent to teach at Stonyhurst for two years, then in 1928 returned to St Beuno’s for his tertianship. On 23 August 1929 he sailed for South Africa. His first assignment was at Triashill Mission. He took his Final Vows in Salisbury on 2 February 1930. In January 1931 he went to Francis Xavier’s Mission at Kutama where he was Superior until 1935 when he became head of the training school. He became ill in 1937 and returned to England in 1940. He was an R.A.F chaplain during the Second World War and was demobilised in August 1946. In 1949 he went to Loyola Hall, Rainhill and became editor of the Missionary Magazine until 1960, when Fr Thwaites SJ took over. He also raised funds for the missions. He suffered a series of strokes in the mid-1960s and died in his bed on 3 December 1970. He was buried in the graveyard of St Bartholomew’s, Rainhill.
