Walter Smith was born in North Ormsby, Yorkshire, 25 July 1915, and was educated by the Marist Fathers at their college in Middlesbrough. After working for a time as a dental mechanic he joined the novitiate at Manresa in 1935. After the usual studies there and philosophy at Heythrop he taught at Preston from 1942-45. He did theology at Heythrop, being ordained in 1947, and taught at Leeds for a year while awaiting tertianship, which he did at Rathfarnham, Dublin. He then taught at St Ignatius College, Stamford Hill, where he was largely involved in games as well as classes. At the end of his time at Stamford Hill, in 1954, he was appointed parish priest and Minister at the Sacred Heart, Accrington. During his time there he raised funds and organised the painting of the whole church. He then raised funds to build the Holy Family School. When he left Accrington, Fr Smith was posted to St Francis Xavier’s parish staff in Liverpool, where he served for two years. In 1962 he joined the parish staff at St Aloysius’, Glasgow, where he remained for fifteen years. He then spent some months, from March 1977, as parish priest at Forres before retiring due to poor health. He went into the Bon Secours Hospital in Glasgow, where he remained until his death, 28 March 1978.
