Andrew Bulbeck was born in Golders Green, London, on 16 May 1914. He was educated in St Anthony’s, Eastbourne, Ealing Priory and Mount St Mary’s College. He entered the Society of Jesus on 7 September 1932, joining the novitiate at Roehampton.

After first vows and a juniorate at Roehampton, Bulbeck studied Philosophy at the philosophate of the Paris Province at Maison St Louis in St Helier, Jersey. From January 1939 he served a four-year regency at St Francis Xavier College, Liverpool. After this Bulbeck studied Theology at Heythrop College, where he was ordained as a Roman Catholic Priest in his third year on 12 September 1946. Following ordination, Bulbeck joined the parish staff at St Aloysius, Glasgow, and then made his tertianship at St Beuno’s. He next taught at Barlborough Hall School before being sent to the Guiana [Guyana] Mission in 1952. In Guyana, Bulbeck initially served on the cathedral staff in Georgetown. Until 1957 he was parish priest at Plaisance.

Bulbeck returned to England in 1957 suffering from a severe back complaint. He was unable to return to Guyana and served in a number of parishes in England: St Francis Xavier, Liverpool (1960-1962); St-Mary’s-on-the-Quay, Bristol (1962-1968); St Ignatius, Stamford Hill (1968-1969); St Teresa’s, Charlbury (1969-1997). Following the move of Heythrop College from Oxfordshire to London, the Jesuits were asked by the Archbishop of Birmingham to look after the parishes of Charlbury and Chipping Norton in rural Oxfordshire. In this capacity Bulbeck served as parish priest at Charlbury for 28 years. Bulbeck’s final parish work was at Braunton in Devon.

In 2000, Bulbeck moved to the Mount Street community in London. He carried out supply work as a chaplain to the Canonesses of St Augustine at Sayers Common in Sussex. With his health declining, Bulbeck was unable to continue active work. He was cared for at Mount Street and then at the Farm Lane Care Home. He died on 17 October 2007. His Requiem Mass was held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Farm Street, on 25 October 2007. </Nationality>
