DescriptionThe volume primarily contains correspondence concerned with the construction of the Church of the Immaculate Conception at Farm Street, but also includes other forms of document such as architectural plans, financial accounts, and lists. The volume contains material related to: - the early preparations for the construction of a church in London such as the identification of suitable sites and the raising of funds with which to build - the dispute between the Jesuits in London and the Vicar Apostolic and secular clergy in London & the resolution of the dispute with the Vicar Apostolic - negotiations with Rome over the conditions attached to the construction of the church - the organisation and presentation of a petition by laypersons to the Pope - the administration of finances linked with the building work such as accounts, lists of subscribers to the church fund, details of land purchases, contents of properties acquired, invoices, rents owed, potential rental income, labour and material costs - the progress of the building work and the employment of architects and craftsmen. The volume concludes with documents relating to the completion of the Church of the Immaculate Conception, aspects of the Church in operation in the 1860s, and correspondence concerned with further Jesuit missions in London.
